James' Review

The Hoskins family (formerly orchardists) decided to move into grapegrowing in 1994 and have progressively established high-quality vineyards. Right from the outset, Brangayne has produced excellent wines across all mainstream varieties, remarkably ranging from Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon. Son David has been managing the business since 2005, which sells a substantial part of its crop to other winemakers. Exports to the UK, Canada and Spain.

About this winery

The Brangayne and Ynys Witrin vineyards lie on the north eastern slopes of extinct volcano Mount Canobolas, near Orange in New South Wales, one of the highest and coldest grape districts in Australia. Often under snow in winter and mild in summer, the cold climate offers ideal conditions for the production of premium grapes, combining generous fruit flavour, acid and length in wines of intensity and elegance. The extended period of ripening produces a subtle and highly complex character in the wines. This long ripening period and the deep, rich volcanic soil position Brangayne among the few vineyards in Australia capable of producing distinctive cold climate wines of high calibre.

Brangayne vineyard is situated at 970 metres, and is the site where the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Meunier grapes are grown. Ynys Witrin is the vineyard where the Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes are grown at 870 metres in altitude. Dr Richard Smart provided top level viticultural advice from the establishment of the vineyards.

Specialties

Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Tristan (cabernet, shiraz, merlot) Isolde Reserve Chardonnay. Also produce pinot grigio, riesling, cabernet, shiraz.
