The Smith family, led by Murray Smith, was one of the early movers in Orange. The vineyard has always been dry-grown, gaining strength from the free-draining clay loam derived from basalt soils. The wines are released under three labels, the best-known the striking blue label, which adorned all of the wines up to 2002. In that year the Strawhouse label came into being, with grapes sourced from a vineyard immediately to the north of Canobolas-Smith. The newest label is The Shine, utilising the golden mean enunciated by Pythagoras, and is reserved for very special wines.
