James' Review

Cumulus Wines was established in 2004, and is now majority owned by the Berardo Group of Portugal (which has numerous world-size wine investments in Portugal, Canada and Madeira). Over 500 ha of vineyards, planted in the late 1990s, focus on shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and merlot. The wines are released under three brands: Rolling, from the Central Ranges Zone; Climbing, solely from Orange fruit; and the third, Cumulus, super-premium from the best of the estate vineyard blocks. Exports to the UK, the US, Germany, China and NZ.

About this winery

Cumulus Estate Wines vineyard was established in 1995. Our 508 hectare vineyard gently rises and falls above an elevation of 600m above sea level - thereby traversing both the Orange and Central Ranges Geographical Indication (GI) wine regions. In such unique surroundings our multi-regional vineyard provides a blend of elevation, terrain, soil and aspect which coupled with the area's high altitude, intense sunlight and cool climate delivers wines with bright fruit flavours and subtle elegance.

Specialties

The quality of our wines begins at the vineyard where north and north-easterly facing slopes capture the morning sun, gently warming the vines. High overhead canopies protect the grapes during the heat of the day and the altitudinal drop in the overnight temperatures establishes the wines' linear structure and cool-climate spice notes. The ancient combination of rich volcanic soils over a limestone base provides an excellent structure for well-balanced vine growth. Winemaker Debbie Lauritz believes that the fruit should be the main focus of all our wines, with oak, yeast and other secondary characteristics supporting and enhancing the total varietal character. These natural elements of climate and soil, coupled with an inspired winemaking philosophy produces fruit-driven, layered and beautifully complete cool-climate wines of worldwide acclaim.
