Along with a number of Riverina producers,Westend Estate has made a successful move to lift both the quality and the packaging of its wines. Its leading 3 Bridges range, which has an impressive array of gold medals to its credit since being first released in 1997, is anchored in part on estate vineyards. Bill Calabria has been involved in the Australian wine industry for more than 40 years, and is understandably proud of the achievements both of Westend and the Riverina wine industry as a whole. It is moving with the times, increasing its plantings of durif, and introducing aglianico, nero d’Avola, and st macaire (a problematic variety not recognised by the ultimate authority of such matters, Jancis Robinson, who says it is a small town in the Bordeaux region). These new plantings have paralleled an increase in Westend’s wine production. Equally importantly, it is casting its net over Hilltops and the Canberra District, premium regions not too far from home. Exports to the UK, the US, Canada, Russia, China and Japan.
