John and Lorraine Brewer have been grapegrowers for over 30 years, but when son Sam went to CSU to complete a degree in wine science, they celebrated his graduation by crushing 1 tonne of shiraz, fermenting the grapes in a milk vat. The majority of the grapes from the estate plantings are sold, but each year a little more has been made under the Yarran banner, and along the way a winery with a crush capacity of 150 tonnes built. Sam worked for Southcorp and De Bortoli in Australia, and overseas (in the US and China), but after 10 years decided in 2009 to take the plunge and concentrate on the family winery, together with his parents. The majority of the grapes come from the family vineyard, but some parcels are sourced from growers including Lake Cooper Estate in the Heathcote region. In future years it is intended that the portfolio of different regions will be gradually increased, although Sam has demonstrated his ability to make silk purses out of sow’s ears. Exports to China.
