This is the thoroughly impressive venture of winemaker Briony Hoare and viticulturist Tony Hoare, who began their life partnership after meeting while studying wine science at the Roseworthy campus of Adelaide University. Their involvement in the industry dates back to the early 1990s, Briony working around Australia with many of the flagship wines of (then) Southcorp, Tony gaining extensive experience in Mildura, the Hunter Valley and McLaren Vale (it was in McLaren Vale that he spent five years as viticulturist for Wirra Wirra). In 2005 the pair decided to go it alone, setting up a wine consultancy, and in ’07 launching Beach Road. An early focus on Italian varieties stemmed from Briony’s vintage in Piedmont where she worked with barbera, nebbiolo, gavi and moscato. Along the way, however, they both had a lot of exposure to grenache, shiraz and mourvedre; it is not surprising that one of the first wines to be released was a Shiraz Grenache, joined by PetitVerdot in ’05, Fiano, Greco di Tufo and Primitivo (the Italian name for zinfandel). The ’09 Fiano was awarded the trophy for Best White Wine at the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show ’09, while the ’09 Greco di Tufo secured the Chairman’s Selection Trophy from Max Allen.
