In March 2008, founders Bruce and Jenny Chalmers sold (to Macquarie Diversified Agriculture Fund) what was the largest vine nursery propagation business in Australia, plus 650 ha of planted vines, an additional 600 ha available for planting, plus 1500 ha of protected forest along a 14-km Murray River frontage. The Chalmers have, however, kept the brands and the winemaking side of the business, with a medium-term grape-supply contract from Macquarie. The future home of Chalmers is an 80-ha property on the Mt Camel Range, 50 km north of Heathcote. The east-facing, sloped block, running to the top of the ridge, is being planted to vermentino, fiano, greco di tufo, moscato giallo, nero d’Avola, lagrein, sagrantino, lambrusco maestri, aglianico, shiraz and malbec. Exports to the UK and Denmark.
