Deviation Road was created in 1998 by Hamish Laurie, great-great-grandson of Mary Laurie, SA’s first female winemaker. He initially joined with father Dr Chris Laurie in 1992 to help build the Hillstowe Wines business; the brand was sold to Banksia Wines in 2001, but the Laurie family retained the vineyard, which now supplies Deviation Road with its grapes. Wife Kate joined the business in 2001, having studied winemaking and viticulture in Champagne, then spending four years at her family’s Stone Bridge winery in Manjimup. All the wines come from the family vineyards, but only account for a small portion of the annual grape production of those vineyards. It also has 3 ha of pinot noir and shiraz at Longwood, where its new cellar door is situated. Exports to the UK, the US and Hong Kong.
