This venture began in the late 1990s with the establishment of two vineyards at different locations in the Adelaide Hills. The Schoenthal Vineyard near Lobethal, at an elevation of 440–500 m, is planted primarily to sauvignon blanc and chardonnay, with smaller amounts of pinot noir and pinot gris. The Howard Vineyard is at a lower elevation, and the slightly warmer site has been planted (in descending order) to sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, semillon, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz, viognier and cabernet franc. The substantial quantities of grapes not required for the Howard Vineyard label are sold to other winemakers.

The Howard Vineyard philosophy is to create outstanding wines which are elegant, fruit driven and reflect the possibilities of the various terroir of the Adelaide Hills ...In 1889 Amos William Howard discovered subterranean clover growing naturally in the Adelaide Hills. Triggering a major contribution to the increase in pasture productivity, the seeding of 'Howard' and 'Mt. Barker' clovers became widespread throughout rural Australia. A thriving clover seed industry continues to this day.Howard Vineyard and Cellar Door now occupy the site of his discovery.Established in the late 1990's, the Howard Vineyard group owns two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills and is one of the largest independent suppliers of premium Adelaide Hills grapes. The Howard Vineyard wine brand was established in 2005 and the Cellar Door opened in November 2006. Grapes from selected blocks of both our vineyards are used to make our wines. Winemaking is carried out by Michael Sykes with Mark Swann providing additional oenological advice.Twin estates provides access to the best terroirs. The Schoenthal (“beautiful valley”) Vineyard comprises 36 hectares near Lobethal and is a cool site in a cool climate. This is best for the earlier ripening varieties including the whites of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris and also the red Pinot Noir. The elevation of 440 – 500 metres with an east facing aspect ensures ideal ripening during the autumn but with some sun protection during hot summer afternoons. The Howard Vineyard of 24 hectares lies between Nairne, Littlehampton and Mt. Barker in the eastern Adelaide Hills. Located near the crest of the valley at an elevation of 360 – 400 metres and north-west facing it provides a warmer site in a cool climate. The site has slightly greater, sunlight exposure during the autumn and ensures the later-ripening varieties will consistently mature before harvest. This is ideal for growing premium red wine grapes including Shiraz and the Cabernet family and also the white grape, Semillon. Howard Vineyard was recently judged the best Cabernet Franc vineyard in Australia.
Cool climate white & red varieties, Cabernet Franc is grown as a specialtity at our Nairne vineyard and used for our Amos & Clover Leaf red wines and Clover Leaf rose wine. it is often added as a small percentage (~5%) to enhance our Cabernet Sauvignons.
