Jeffrey Grosset has assumed the unchallenged mantle of Australias foremost riesling maker in the wake of John Vickery stepping back to a consultancy role for Richmond Grove. Grossets pre-eminence in riesling making is recognised both domestically and internationally; however, he merits equal recognition for the other wines in his portfolio: Semillon Sauvignon Blanc from Clare Valley/Adelaide Hills, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Adelaide Hills; and Gaia, a Bordeaux blend from the Clare Valley. These are all benchmarks. His quietly spoken manner conceals a steely will, exemplified by his long and ultimately successful battle to prevent the use of riesling on flagons and bottles as a generic description, rather than varietal, and his subsequent success in having the Clare Valley riesling makers migrate en masse to screwcaps, unleashing a torrent of change across Australia. Trial plantings (2ha) of fiano, aglianico, nero dAvola and petit verdot suggest some new wines may be gestating. Exports to all major markets.
