The unusual name comes from family history. One branch of the Kidman family moved to the Mount Gambier district in 1858, but Thomas Kidman (who had been in the foster care of the Banks family from the age of two to 13) moved to Broken Hill/southwest Qld to work for the famous Kidman Bros pastoral interests. He ‘retired’ from the outback, and in 1919 bought this property. His second son was named Banks Thargomindah Kidman, and it was he and wife Genny who decided to diversify their grazing activities by planting vines in the 1980s: most is under contract, leaving 1 ha each of merlot and cabernet sauvignon for the Banks Thargo brand. Ownership has now passed to Genny, Jon and Heather Kidman.
