After visiting the Barossa Valley for over a decade, and working during vintage with Andrew Seppelt at Murray Street Vineyards, Melbourne residents Colin and Fiona Sheppard decided on a seachange and found a small, old vineyard overlooking Flaxmans Valley. It consists of 1 ha of 40+-year-old riesling, 1 ha of 50+-year-old shiraz and a small planting of 40+-year- old semillon. The vines are dry-grown, hand-pruned and hand-picked, and treated – say the Sheppards – as their garden. Yields are restricted to under 4 tonnes per ha, and small amounts of locally grown grapes are also purchased.
