Semprevino is the venture of three men who became close friends while studying at Monash University in early 1990s: Russell Schroder (mechanical engineering), Simon Doak and David Bruce (both science), although all three branched in different directions after graduating in 1993. The prime mover is Russell who, after working for CRA/Rio Tinto for five years, left on a four-month trip to Western Europe and became captivated with the life of a vigneron. Returning to Australia, he enrolled in part-time wine science at CSU, spending the next six years working for Bluescope Steel at Hastings on the Mornington Peninsula, obtaining his wine science degree in 2005. Between ’03 and ’06 he worked vintages in Italy and Vic, coming under the wing of Stephen Pannell at Tinlins in ’06, where the Semprevino wines are made.
