Dr Graeme Bertuch’s involvement in grapegrowing and winemaking goes back far further than the establishment of Mount Cole Wineworks. In 1977 he established Cathcart Ridge, but found the time demands on a rural doctor-cum-vigneron were too much. He sold Cathcart Ridge in ’93, but did not sell the itch to grow grapes and make wine. He now has 3.5 ha of shiraz and 1 ha of viognier planted since 1998, and in 2007 purchased the somewhat neglected and rundown Mt Chalambar Vineyard previously owned by Trevor Mast, with 2 ha each of riesling and chardonnay planted in the 1980s. Since that time there has been a systematic, albeit gradual, resurrection of the vineyard.
