Box Stallion is the joint venture of Stephen Wharton, John Gillies and Garry Zerbe, who have linked two vineyards at Bittern and Merricks North, with 16 ha of vines planted between 1997 and 2003. What was once a thoroughbred stud has now become a vineyard, with the Red Barn (in their words) ‘now home to a stable of fine wines’ Exports to the US, Canada, Japan and China.
Author: James Halliday
Box Stallion produced its first vintage in 2001 and since then has won many awards for the range of varietal wines made by veteran winemaker Alex White. The two vineyards at Bittern and Merricks North total 18 ha and were planted in 1995 and 1999. The wines are all made on the Merricks North site that also contains the Cellar Door. Housed in what was the Stallion Barn of the former thoroughbred stud, the Box Stallion Cellar Door contains a relaxed restaurant catering for lunch 7 days a week and specialises in catering for group bookings. Exports to China, USA and Canada.
