This is the venture of Tony Lee and journalist wife Cathy Gowdie. Cathy explains where it all began in 1998. ‘We were not obvious candidates for a seachange. When we talked of moving to the country, friends pointed out that Tony and I were hardly back-to-nature types.“Do you own a single pair of shoes without heels?” asked a friend. But at the end of a bleak winter, we bought an old farmhouse on 10 daffodil-dotted acres at Red Hill and planted a vineyard.’ They planted pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot gris and shiraz on the north-facing slopes of the old farm. The name (and the catchy label) stems from the tale of two fox-hunters who began a competition with each other in 1936, hanging their kills on the branches of an ancient eucalypt tree to keep count. The corpses have gone, but not the nickname for the area.
