Barnaby Flanders was a co-founder of Allies Wines (see separate entry) in 2003, with some of the wines made under the Garagiste label. Allies has now gone its own way, and Barnaby has a controlling interest in the Garagiste brand. The focus is on the Mornington Peninsula, and in particular grapes from the sand-based soils of Tuerong and Moorooduc in the north, the brown loam/red volcanic soils of Merricks and Merricks North in the middle, and the red volcanic soils of Red Hill and Main Ridge in the most elevated southern sector. The grapes are hand-sorted in the vineyard and again in the winery. Chardonnay is whole bunch- pressed, barrel-fermented with wild yeast in new and used French oak, mlf variably used, 8?9 months on lees. Pinot noir is whole berry (destemmed) and/or whole bunches, wild-yeast fermentation, 19?22 days on skins, 10 months maturation in French oak, mainly used, seldom fined or filtered. Exports to Singapore, Hong Kong and China.
