Mornington Peninsula

Port Phillip Estate has been owned by Giorgio and Dianne Gjergja since 2000.The ability of the site (enhanced, it is true, by the skills of Sandro Mosele) to produce outstanding Syrah, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and very good Sauvignon Blanc, is something special. Whence climate change? Quite possibly the estate may have answers for decades to come. A futuristic, multimillion-dollar restaurant, cellar door and winery complex was opened prior to the 2010 vintage. Exports to the UK, Canada and Singapore.

The Home of Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate WinesWith panoramic views over undulating vineyards and the sea, Port Phillip Estate lies on a spectacular site on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula. The landmark building, designed by Wood Marsh Architecture, unfurls across the ridge, spiraling from the ground and rising to form the dramatic 120 metre eastern wall. This abstract sculptural form nestles into the landscape and conceals much of the building.Inside, beyond the monumental limestone rammed earth exterior walls of the building, the light-filled Dining Room and Cellar Door open to an expansive outdoor timber deck taking advantage of the sweeping views. Driftwood coloured earthen walls, polished concrete floors, and dark stained timber integrate beautifully with the landscape.A dramatic staircase descends into the belly of the building, deep underground, revealing state-of-the-art winemaking facilities, the cavernous Barrel Room, the intimate Museum Wine Library and six luxury accommodation suites that also share the panoramic views. Many of the design initiatives embodied in Port Phillip Estate salute environmental sustainability. The rammed earth exterior walls and the generous eaves on the western side of the building shield interior spaces from the sun and help to control extreme temperature fluctuations, an integrated water reclaiming plant converts black water to grade a water for use in the vineyard, solar panels harness the power of the sun and assist to heat water and control temperature and low energy led (light emitting diode) lighting reduces energy usage by approximately 80 percent. These initiatives are part of an ongoing philosophy of environmental responsibility. An Architectural LandmarkPort Phillip Estate was honoured with two prestigious awards at the 2010 Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards. The landmark building, designed by Wood Marsh Architecture, received the National Award for Commercial Architecture and the National Award for Interior Architecture.Port Phillip Estate was also honoured at the 2010 Victorian Architecture Awards, awarded the top prize for commercial architecture, the Sir Osborn McCutcheon Award. The jury described the building as being like ‘an archaeological artefact revealed by drifting sands, the rammed earth walls of Port Phillip Estate spiral from the earth and heighten anticipation of what lies below.’Visit Port Phillip Estate263 Red Hill RoadRed Hill SouthMornington PeninsulaVictoria 3937 AustraliaMelway reference 191 G2Telephone +61 3 5989 4444Trading HoursCellar DoorWines to taste and purchase daily 11 am to 5 pm.Cellar Door BistroLunch Saturday to Tuesday.
