Whimwood Estate Wines

Western Australia | Blackwood Valley

Our Review

Maree Tinker and Steve Johnstone say they fell in love with the property at first sight in 2011, without even knowing that it had a vineyard. The name draws on the region’s past timber-milling history, where horse-drawn whims were used for hauling logs. The vineyard had been planted in 2004 to chardonnay, with an agreement in place for the purchase of the grapes by a local winemaker. The grape shortage of ’04 had turned into a grape surplus by ’11, and it was left to Maree and Steve to remove 6000 of the 8000 chardonnay vines, and increase the handful of shiraz vines originally planted by grafting onto chardonnay rootstock. They now have 0.7ha of chardonnay and 0.5ha of shiraz. -JAMES HALLIDAY
