Geologists Mark Gifford and Tim Markwell formed a joint venture to locate and develop Blue Poles Vineyard. Their search was unhurried, and contact with the University of Bordeaux (supplemented by extensive reading of technical literature) showed that a portion of the property included a block that mimicked some of the best vineyards in St Emilion and Pomerol, leading to the planting of merlot and cabernet franc in 2001. Further soil mapping and topography also identified blocks best suited to shiraz and Rhône Valley white varietals, which were planted in 2003. The vineyard maintenance has proceeded with minimal irrigation, and no fertilisers.
