Larry and Cheryl de Jong planted a total of 12.8 ha of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, semillon and sauvignon blanc in 1998, adding another 2 ha (chardonnay) in '03. The intention was to simply be grapegrowers, but in 2003, concerned about the uncertain nature of the industry, they decided to have part of the grapes contract-made. For once Murphy's Law worked favourably; with three wineries competing for the grapes, a long-term contract was entered into with one winemaker, allowing the de Jongs to pursue their other aim of making small quantities of wines for sale primarily to friends and through Cheryl's boutique guesthouse in Subiaco.
