Father John and son Travis French purchased a 100-ha property abutting the Chapman Brook and Blackwood National Park in the southern part of Margaret River in 1992. Says Travis ‘We then realised that we had to do something with it, so the thing at the time to be done with rural land was to plant vines, and so we did.’ Sauvignon blanc and semillon constitute the lion’s share, but there are significant plantings of chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot. Until 2006 they were content to sell their grapes to Cape Mentelle, but in that year decided to have wine contract-made by the highly experienced Bruce Dukes and Amanda Kramer. Given the maturity of the vineyards it is not surprising that the wines are of such high quality. Warner Glen and Frog Belly are the main labels, Smokin’ Gun and The Pick outliers. Exports to the US, Canada and China.
