The definitive guide to Australian Wines

Plan a trip to historic Barossa Valley winery Yalumba next month for one of the most exclusive tastings on the wine calendar.
If you’ve ever wanted to play wine critic for a day and savour some of the world’s finest wines, Yalumba has just the experience. Australia’s oldest family-owned winery will host its annual Museum Tasting next month with a showcase of once-in-a-lifetime wines, open to all wine lovers for just $75.
Yalumba’s fifth-generation proprietor Robert Hill-Smith spent hours in the winery’s coveted museum cellar deliberating over the wines for this year’s line-up. Together with Head of Winemaking Louisa Rose, they have selected an incredible collection of wines.
Previous Museum Tastings have set the bar high, featuring enviable collections of fine wines, from 75-year-old Yalumba rieslings and even older fortifieds to more recent bucket-list wines from New Zealand, France, Italy and beyond. The exclusive tasting also presents the opportunity for participants to engage in discussions with panellists Robert, Louisa and wine writer Nick Ryan.
As Nick says, this is one event not to miss. “The Yalumba Museum Tastings are rare and unique events – a glimpse behind the usually sealed doors guarding one of the great wine collections in the country,” he says. “Not only do they offer the chance to see some of the benchmark wines from the world’s great vineyards, but they always uncover bottles dripping in Australian wine history as well. Those who’ve been to one before know some of the most treasured treats are lurking among ancient fortifieds sitting quietly on a table at the end.”
The Museum Tasting is held as part of the Festival Garden at Yalumba, which unofficially launches the Barossa Vintage Festival – this year marking its 70th anniversary. The family-friendly day includes a host of food and wine events, with a Barossa Farmers’ Market breakfast, a Providores’ Market full of local artisanal produce, a cooking school for kids and more.
