Cabernet sauvignon in a luscious, long-lived style is Margaret River’s calling card and the five ahead represent some of the region’s best, spanning straight-up examples and historic blends.

2013 Redbrook Cabernet Sauvignon
by Matthew Byrne

Winemaker says: An effortlessly elegant wine with intense fruit flavour and fine tannin structure. Blackberry, olive, tobacco and leafy notes combine with underlying characters of cedar and spice from maturation in high-quality French oak.

2016 Diana Madeline
by Vanya Cullen

Winemaker says: Deep crimson hue with magenta edges. It has a wonderful complexity and vitality, with layers of dark fruit enhanced by gorgeous leafy notes. The elegant, silky, fruit-driven palate is full of dark berries and some chocolate savouriness. There is a lovely touch of spice that melts into the fruit. Watch as this wine unfolds and enjoy it over decades.

RRP $129 | 2046 | Cullen Wines

2014 Tom Cullity
by Virginia Willcock

Winemaker says: Vasse Felix, Margaret River's founding wine estate, was established by Dr Thomas Brendan Cullity in 1967. Among his first plantings were cabernet sauvignon and malbec vines, from which he produced the estate’s first red wine. The Tom Cullity descends from these original vines and represents the pinnacle of Vasse Felix’s wines. A remarkably refined, soft and creamy cabernet style, its flavour is full yet lifted, with cherry, cassis, hints of Cinotto, cedar and chocolate.

RRP $180 | 2034 | Vasse Felix

2014 Amelia Park Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
by Jeremy Gordon

Winemaker says: Our reserve is a selection of the best parcels from each vintage. Offering a complex bouquet of blueberry, cassis, violet and graphite, the palate is beautifully balanced with luscious red-berry fruits and smooth, fine tannins. Aged in French oak for 18 months, this wine has excellent cellaring potential.

RRP $55 | 2028 | Amelia Park Wines

2015 Howard Park Leston Cabernet Sauvignon
by Janice McDonald

Winemaker says: Aromas of dense berry and plum fruits are seasoned with cedar, sweet mint, savoury herbs and vanilla spice. The fruit weight is opulent and the supple tannins guide the shape and length of the palate.

RRP $46 | 2022 | Howard Park Wines
