At the Shortest Lunch, on from June 23 to 24, beat the crowds at some of the Yarra Valley’s hidden gems. Plan a cosy weekend with our suggested trail ahead, complete with a handy map.

The name for this food and wine festival takes its inspiration from the fact that it coincides with the Winter Solstice, which marks the shortest day of the year.

Make the most of the short day with this opportunity to poke around some of the Yarra Valley’s exceptional small wineries. Plus, what better time of the year to warm up with a glass of wine than in winter, with the romantically foggy countryside as your backdrop?

In keeping with Winter Solstice celebrations around the globe, which include fires, feasts, music and more, the 12 participating wineries will each serve up specially created winter dishes in their warming cellar doors, many with hearths to huddle beside and live music to enjoy. Some of the comforting dishes you can dig into include pan-seared ricotta gnocchi, slow braises, roasts and ragus, hot apple pies, Greek doughnuts and chocolate-dipped churros – to name a few.

To help you plan your Winter Solstice weekend, we’ve created an itinerary of our top picks to follow on the map ahead. Lock in your loved ones, circle it on the calendar and get excited for the Yarra Valley's Shortest Lunch.
