Poachers

New South Wales | Canberra District

Our Review

Poachers Vineyard, owned by the Bruce family, shares its home with the Poachers Pantry, a renowned gourmet smokehouse. The quality of the wines is very good. The northeast-facing slopes, at an elevation of 720m, provide some air drainage and hence protection against spring frosts.

About

Located in the Canberra Wine Region, the Wily Trout Vineyard was planted in the late 90s on the hills surrounding the Poachers Pantry property.

Our white grape varieties, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were planted on the granite hills that rise to 800m. The cooler climate produces grapes that make delicate yet complex white wines.

Our red grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are situated on the north east facing granite hills that rise to 725 metres - perfect for catching the morning sun and for allowing the cool air to drain down the Nanima valley. This unique location produces grapes that are turned into stunning red wines - soft spicy Shiraz and delicate Pinot Noir.

Second generation grower William Bruce teamed with experienced wine makers, Nick Spencer and Hamish Young, produce elegant cool-climate Canberra district wines.

Food

Information

The Smokehouse Café is set in a quaint weatherboard farmhouse surrounded by beautiful country gardens. The Cafe serves a delicious range of contemporary Australian dishes using the traditionally smoked meats produced on the property as well as local ingredients.

A range of events are held at the Smokehouse Cafe throughout the year including the annual Summerside Festival - a celebration of summer, and the Fireside Festival - a celebration of winter. 100 mile dinners are held regularly - all produce is sourced from within in a 100 mile radius of Poachers Panty, supporting regional producers and reducing food miles from farm to kitchen. Our five course degustation dinners matched to the Wily Trout wines grown on the property's vineyard are outstanding. The Smokehouse Cafe has been listed in the Sydney Morning Heral Good Food Guide for several years.
