Capercaillie is a small boutique Winery located on the Lovedale side of the Hunter Valley. The founder of this company, Alasdair Sutherland, was from Scotland and his heritage is reflected in the very name 'Capercaillie'. It is the Gaelic name given to the black woodlands grouse, native to the pine forests of Scotland and is now extremely rare.
Our aim to produce premium quality wines, and maintain our high standard of customer service. We can accommodate almost any taste, and the range of wines available is always growing. Our current varieties include the Hunter Classics, Multi-regional blends and a range of sparkling and sweet dessert styles.
We also have our iconic range, these wines are given gaelic names and are what we consider to be our most premium wines.
2012 Sonse Sparkling
This Blanc de Blanc traditional method wine has been made exclusively from Chardonnay. The fruit was harvested in the last week of January 2012. A cool 14 day ferment with a neutral yeast strain and maturation in 2 year old French oak barriques produced a restrained base wine, displaying fresh apple and citrus aromas. The wine underwent tirage in November 2012 and was disgorged after 2 years on yeast lees. This lees contact has given the wine another dimension, adding texture and a layer of creaminess to the mouth feel.
2016 Creel Semillon
Fruit for this wine was sourced from the Pokolbin region in the Hunter Valley. Only the free run juice fraction was used for cold settling and fermentation. A cool ferment with a neutral yeast variety has allowed the wine to reflect the vineyard terroir and the inherent qualities of the Semillon variety. Concentrated lemon citrus characters are the primary focus of the wine. With careful cellaring this wine will develop the toast and honey characters associated with the variety and will continue to drink well into the next decade.
2014 Ghillie Shiraz
This wine is produced using selected parcels of fruit from the 70 year old dry grown vines from our Wynwood Estate vineyards in Pokolbin. These Shiraz vineyards are situated on deep red volcanic soils that have been shown to be ideal for this variety in the Hunter. A dry spring and a summer of above average rainfall provided excellent growing conditions and allowed for full varietal flavour expression.
This wine is a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, which were produced from low yielding vines from the Barossa Valley. This blended wine shows weight and structure, with lied darker berry fruits and on the nose. A rich and concentrated palate is supported by silky tannins.
2013 Ceilidh Shiraz
This wine is a blend from two famous Australian wine growing regions, McLaren Vale (85%) and the Hunter Valley (15%). The wine displays great depth of colour. Lifted aromas of spice, redfruit and chocolate are evident on the nose. These characters persist on the palate and are supported by fine tannins giving the palate weight and persistence. With careful cellaring this wine will continue to drink well into the next decade.
