James' Review

There's a long family history attached to this embryonic wine business. The history began with Walter Hackett (1827-1914), a Sussex farmer; next came Joseph Hackett (1880-1958), followed by Joseph Robert Hackett (1911-98), and now fourth-generation Mark and Skye Bollen. Over the generations, the family worked in a successful major grain and seed business, then established the Nyora grazing property near Mintaro and Wyndham Park near Sevenhill, which is still farmed today with herds of black and red Angus cattle. Mark and Skye returned to the Clare Valley after spending 25 years working in other pursuits, Mark in wine sales and marketing, Skye in 5-star hotels for a decade before embarking on a successful career in recruitment. In 2014 Mark and Skye purchased 6ha of shiraz (planted '98), which is now dry-grown and organically managed. In lieu of Angus cattle, they have a flock of Black Suffolk sheep that roam the vineyard during winter to provide natural weed control and fertilise the soil.


Sussex Squire Wines is an award winning family owned winery in the heart of the beautiful Clare Valley. We are part of the 4th Generation to work the land in the Clare Valley and our focus is dry grown Shiraz. Our passion is in developing wines from interesting dry grown vineyards that show unique characteristics and flavour profiles that we can represent in the wines we produce. We focus on sustainable management of our vineyards to allow the grapes to express the true characteristics of the vineyard.
