The definitive guide to Australian Wines
Ruckus Estate was established in 2000 after a protracted search for high quality viticultural land, with a particular focus on the production of merlot utilising recently released clones that hold the promise of producing wine of a quality not previously seen. However, it's not a case of all eggs in the same basket, for malbec, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz have also been planted. It was not until '13 that the first small amount of wine was made (most of the grapes were, and will continue to be, sold to other winemakers). Given the quality of the Merite Merlot, the plan to increase production to 2000 dozen should be achieved with ease, with Shiraz Malbec released in May '16, and Cabernet Sauvignon in the pipeline.

Mérite Merlot is created from a large multi-clone parcel of Merlot. The rocky soils in this sloping parcel comprise iron-rich Terra Rossa and Terra Rossa/loam mix over a limestone and clay base at varying depths. The interplay between a deep plate of clay and infertile limestone is an important key to creating Merlot with structure and aromatics. The vineyard is managed with sensitivity to the different clones and varying soil profiles, producing A grade Merlot from mature, balanced vines.Mérite Merlot is a single vineyard pure Merlot - made of 100 percent Merlot. Clonal batches will be vinified independently and then assembled. Each batch brings different attributes to the wine, creating a complete wine without needing another variety blended in. The percentage of each batch in the final blend will vary with each vintage, so as to produce a reliable single vineyard Merlot and to create a wine that is an authentic reflection of the site, variety and vintage.
