James' Review

Basils Farm is the venture of Jim and Tina McMeckan, who have had a holiday home on the Bellarine Peninsula for more than 30 years. In 2005 they discovered (and purchased) a property with stunning views across Swan Bay to Queenscliff, and it was on this property that they established Basils Farm. It has 3.86ha under vine (pinot noir, chardonnay and shiraz), the first full vintage from these plantings occurring in '18, supplemented in the meantime by purchased grapes grown on the Bellarine Peninsula. Wine is sold through the onsite cafe and cellar door, online, and wholesale in the Melbourne/greater Geelong region. The cafe uses its own farm-grown and locally sourced produce to create a seasonal menu. There are three brands: Pn2 (fruit for the Pn2 Prosecco is sourced from the King Valley), Basils Farm and Kiltynane (made from local fruit).

About

Located on Swan Bay on the Bellarine Peninsula, Basils Farm (Formerly known as Kiltynane Wines) has approximately 4.2 ha under vine, including: 0.4ha vineyard of Pinot Noir grapes planted in 2013 (Olive block) for the Basils Farm Rose, 0.4ha vineyard of Pinot Noir planted in 1997 (Dam block) for the Basils Farm Pinot Noir, Pn2 Pinot Noir and Basils Farm Rose and 3.4ha planted in October 2016 (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz). First harvest planned for 2018. Grapes harvested onsite are supplemented with locally sourced fruit to create the Basils Farm range of wines which are sold under three labels: Pn2, Basils Farm and Kiltynane. Fruit for the Pn2 Prosecco is sourced from the King Valley in Victoria. Minimal intervention starts in the vineyard and is continued into the wine making process. Ray Nadeson of Lethbridge Wines in the Moorabool Valley, is the winemaker of the Basils Farm range of wines and is guided by the wineries artisan winemaking principles, which focus on small barrel, wild fermented, small batch wines. The Basils Farm range of wines includes: Prosecco, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rosé, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The winery currently produces 1,500 cases. Wine is sold through the onsite café and cellar door, online and wholesale in the Melbourne and Greater Geelong region. Basils Farm Wine Club members receive 6 bottles of wine sent out 3 times a year from the Kiltynane (premium) range, Basils Farm or a combination. Subscribe to the monthly ‘Farm News” e-newsletter to receive updates regarding events and wine offers. Basils Farm is also home to llama’s, sheep, chicken, and ducks and has 1ha of kitchen gardens and 8ha of conservation land. Basils Café uses its own farm grown and locally sourced produce to create a monthly seasonal menu to showcase their wines. The unique location is also becoming known as a premium tourist destination on the Bellarine Peninsula.
