Western Australia | Mount Barker

Our Review

Plantagenet was established by Tony Smith, who continues to be involved in its management over 45 years later, notwithstanding that it has been owned by Lionel Samson & Son for many years. He established five vineyards: Bouverie in 1968 (sold in 2017), Wyjup in ’71, Rocky Horror 1 in ’88, Rocky Horror 2 in ’97 and Rosetta in ’99. These vineyards are the cornerstones of the substantial production of the consistently high quality wines that have always been the mark of Plantagenet: highly aromatic Riesling, tangy citrus-tinged Chardonnay, glorious Rhône-style Shiraz and ultra-stylish Cabernet Sauvignon. Exports to the UK, Canada, the US, Japan, South Korea and China.

Plantagenet is a pioneer of the Great Southern region of Western Australia with vineyards first planted in 1968 and the first commercial winery established in the region in 1975. Celebrated for its rich heritage the winery is owned by the Lionel Samson family, the oldest family owned business in Western Australia established in Fremantle in 1829. Plantagenet has five estate vineyards in the Mount Barker sub region each with unique characteristics, ancient soils and a cool maritime climate creating expressive wines of provenance, quality and prestige.
