Plantagenet was established by Tony Smith, who continues to be involved in its management over 45 years later, notwithstanding that it has been owned by Lionel Samson & Son for many years. He established five vineyards: Bouverie in 1968 (sold in 2017), Wyjup in ’71, Rocky Horror 1 in ’88, Rocky Horror 2 in ’97 and Rosetta in ’99. These vineyards are the cornerstones of the substantial production of the consistently high quality wines that have always been the mark of Plantagenet: highly aromatic Riesling, tangy citrus-tinged Chardonnay, glorious Rhône-style Shiraz and ultra-stylish Cabernet Sauvignon. Exports to the UK, Canada, the US, Japan, South Korea and China.
Plantagenet Wines embodies the best Western Australia with its distinctive cool climate wines of complexity and elegance. As a pioneer of the Great Southern region of Western Australia, Plantagenet’s reputation is celebrated for its rich heritage, its expressive wines and family-owned sensibility, making it one of the most trusted wine brands in Australia.
Interestingly, the Plantagenet name was selected for two reasons; the winery is located in the Plantagenet Shire of Western Australia and was founded by an actual descendant of the Plantagenet Royal line; a dynasty that came to prominence in England from 1189 until 1485, from King Henry the 2nd to King Richard the 3rd. The three gold lions in our logo are styled after the official royal crest of the House of Plantagenet.
Over the years, Plantagenet has honed its flagship varieties into a distinct Great Southern wine style; a depth of lively flavour, seamless elegance and natural purity.
