There is no doubt the Perth Hills is a very pretty wine region, its twisting roads and multiple sub-valleys reminding me in some ways of the Clare Valley. It also has the great advantage of being an easy drive from Perth. Peter and Edwina Carter have set up their cellar door in an idyllic setting on the edge of Lake Charlotte, with a typical wide and open verandah under a low-sloping roof. They have 2.5ha of verdelho, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and merlot, and their wines are contract-made by long-term Perth Hills winemaker Jim Elson.
