2014 Best white wines under 20

Riesling: The long-discussed riesling renaissance is inching forwards, offering as it does, extraordinary value for money, better than that of any other group, the only drawback the superabundance of choice.

Semillon: I have to admit to an inherited bias for the variety, my mother’s amniotic fluid bolstered by Hunter Valley semillon to the exclusion of all other white wines.

Sauvignon Blanc and blends: Marlborough is not the sole producer of good quality sauvignon blanc, and isn’t able to compete in any way with Australian SBS or SSB blends, especially those from WA.

Chardonnay: Margaret River and the Yarra Valley are regional heroes for chardonnay, but the Margan Family wine reminds us it all began in the Hunter Valley with Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay in 1972.

Other whites: Varietal democracy demands space for varieties other than the big four (riesling, semillon, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay), but this is not the place for a full-blooded choice of the newest alternative varieties.
