It’s clear that the price point breaks next year will have to be adjusted; at the moment I incline to $25 for the white wines and $30 for the reds. Had this been in place for this year the ‘over’ whites would have been reduced to 274 submissions and the ‘over’ reds to 459, the remainder swelling the numbers of the ‘unders’.

The impact will be greatest (by some distance) in the unders with enhanced pools in which to fish. In the Over $30 reds I would expect Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Tasmania pinots will dominate, shiraz a veritable battle of the giants with 2012 Grange and Hill of Grace, and the best of the great 2014 Hunter Valley vintage, making me salivate at the thought.

The three-way struggle between Margaret River, Great Southern and Coonawarra will likewise be as intense as it will be rewarding.
