Obviously enough, there was intense competition for inclusion in this group. The most obvious outcome was a clear link between variety and regions: cool/very cool for riesling; Hunter Valley for semillon; Margaret River for sauvignon blanc semillons blends; Adelaide Hills for sauvignon blanc; and a joust between the Margaret River and Yarra Valley for chardonnay (with only one or two exceptions along the way).

There is a persistent belief, both here and (in particular) overseas that Australia indiscriminately produces every variety in every region. We can, but the best wines have very distinct regional foundations.
