The winners of the fifth annual Qantas epiQure Halliday Australian Wine Companion Awards will be revealed at a gala ceremony in Melbourne on August 2, 2017.
The awards are announced the night before the official release of the 2018 Halliday Wine Companion book, an indispensable compendium of notes on the country’s best wines resulting from more than 10,000 tastings.
Featuring almost 3900 wine reviews by veteran critic James Halliday AM and his panel of experienced tasters, plus scores for 3000 more, the annual guide maps out the major trends in Australian wine and the must-try bottles for the year ahead.
These reviews inform the major accolades of Qantas epiQure Wine of the Year, Wine Australia Winery of the Year and Winemaker of the Year, as well as Best New Winery, Best Value Winery and Dark Horse Winery for the most improved producer. The nine current-release wines considered the best of their variety by the experts are also unveiled, including Best Shiraz and Best Chardonnay, and typically go on to become the year’s fastest sellers.
The question of who will take out the prestigious Winemaker of the Year crown is always a source of great anticipation, with previous winners including Robert Diletti of Castle Rock Estate, Peter Fraser of Yangarra Estate and Sarah Crowe of Yarra Yering.
The Wine of the Year title, meanwhile, has been taken out by the likes of Bass Phillip, Xanadu Wines, Serrat and Best’s Wines with pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz viognier and shiraz respectively.
