Margaret River’s Streicker Wines won this year’s Challenge Trophy with its 2009 Bridgeland Block Syrah. It marks another signpost for this most incredibly adaptable grape variety, although this is by no means the first outstanding shiraz to come from Margaret River, which had three wines in the field of eight gold medal winners competing for the top trophy.
Second place went to Taylors Wines and its 2010 Promised Land Shiraz (which as previously reported won the Trophy for Best Shiraz Under $25) and third place to Casella Wines 2009 yellow tail Reserve Shiraz. Casella also enjoyed notable success in Canberra National Wine Show, albeit without winning any gold medals. For the record, 380 wines were entered in the competition.
