Debra Meiburg MW was one of the first Masters of Wine in Asia, and has been a resident of Hong Kong for nearly 25 years. She is a journalist, educator and public speaker, who also happens to have made wine in Chile, Bordeaux, New York and South Africa.
Living, as she does, in Hong Kong, she has been at the centre of the whirlwind generated by the removal of import licensing laws and taxes on wine last year. She thought it would be an interesting topic to work out just how many importers of wine carry on business in Hong Kong, and whose wines they are importing. She quickly discovered that the removal of the laws meant there was no central repository of knowledge; in the outcome 1200 surveys generated 398 responses, and and ultimate listing of 253 Hong Kong importers, with full details of the portfolio of each of those importers. Each entry shows comments not only on the portfolio, but also the marketing activities and sales team so that smaller producers won’t waste time in dealing with bulk importers (and vice versa).
The book can be purchased online at http://debramasterofwine.com/products/educational/debra-meiburgs-guide-to-the-Hong-Kong-wine-trade/ The cost is HK$360 (AUD$44.50) plus shipping.
