Dr Brian Johnston and his wife Janet are the partners in McKellar Ridge Wines. Brian has completed a postgraduate diploma in science at CSU, focusing on wine science and wine production techniques. The wines come from low-yielding, mature vines (shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot and viognier) and have had significant show success. They are made using a combination of traditional and new winemaking techniques, the emphasis being on fruit-driven styles.

McKellar Ridge Wines “Serious about wine, serious about quality” McKellar Ridge is focussed on producing very high quality wines from hand-picked Canberra District cool climate fruit, which is selected for its natural fruit intensity and grape acid balance. The grapes grown at Point of View vineyard are low yielding dryland grapes, grown on an elevated Murrumbateman site comprising decomposed volcanic granite about 650m above sea level. The vines are 10-15 years of age, all hand pruned to control yield, targeted at 2.5 kilograms per vine, and supplementary irrigation is used to maintain ideal soil moisture during the summer. The vines are two wire Vertical Shoot Positioning to provide good light exposure to the ripening fruit. The wine-making is best practice, with a focus on northern Rhone Valley for the Shiraz-Viognier and Bordeaux style winemaking for the Cabernets, with soft extraction of anthocyanins and flavours from the grapes, basket pressing and gentle handling. The objective is to protect the natural berry fruit flavours and enhance the complexity and intensity of the wines during maturation. High quality french oak barrels are used in the winery to enhance the wine structure and flavour and the wines have won numerous awards. Production is limited to allow quality to shine and a cellar door will be operational in January 2008.
