Mark and Jo Kozned spent months of painstaking research before locating the property on which they have now established their vineyard. Situated 4 km outside of Gumeracha, it has gentle slopes, plenty of water and, importantly, moderately fertile soils. Here the 30-ha Woodlands Ridge Vineyard is planted (in descending order of size) to chardonnay, sauvignon blanc,pinot gris and shiraz. They have subsequently established the Tunnel Hill Vineyard near Forreston, with 16 ha planted to pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, semillon, verdelho, merlot and sangiovese. The name Nova Vita reflects the beginning of the Kozneds’ new life, the firebird on the label coming from their Russian ancestry. It is a Russian myth that only a happy or lucky person may see the bird or hear its song. The increased vineyard resources have led to the Mad Russian range, exclusive to Cellarmasters in Australia, but also exported. The Kozneds have joined forced with Peter Leske to form Revenir, a contract winemaking business that has purchased the former Nepenthe winery, and is where the Nova Vita wines will be made. Exports to Singapore and China.
