Caillard Wine

South Australia | Barossa Valley

Our Review

Andrew Caillard MW has had a long and varied career in wine, including vintages at Brokenwood and elsewhere, but has also taken the final step of making his own wine, with the support of wife Bobby. Andrew says the inspiration to make Mataro (and now Shiraz) came while writing the background for Penfolds’ The Rewards of Patience tastings. He learnt that both Max Schubert and John Davoren had experimented with mataro, and that the original releases of Penfolds St Henri comprised a fair percentage of the variety. For good measure, Andrew’s great (times four) grandfather, John Reynell, planted one of Australia’s first vineyards at Reynella, around 1838. Exports to Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Korea and France. -JAMES HALLIDAY
