Keith and Alison Hentschke purchased Hentley Farm in 1997, then an old vineyard and mixed farming property. Keith has thoroughly impressive credentials, having studied agricultural science at Roseworthy, and then wine marketing, obtaining an MBA. During the 1990s he had a senior production role with Orlando, before moving on to manage one of Australia’s largest vineyard management companies, and from 2002 to ’06 he worked with Nepenthe. Shiraz (26.83 ha), grenache (6.46 ha), cabernet sauvignon (4 ha), zinfandel (0.78 ha) and viognier (0.14 ha) are now in production. The vineyard, situated among rolling hills on the banks of Greenock Creek, has red clay loam soils overlaying shattered limestone, lightly rocked slopes and little top soil. I wish Hentley Farm wasn’t forced by the intransigent (and usually ignorant) US market to use closures that will fail to protect the wines under normal cellaring conditions. Exports to the US and other major markets.
