The definitive guide to Australian Wines
Under the benevolent ownership of the Swiss/Californian Hess Group, Peter Lehmann (the winery) has continued to flourish, making wines from all the major varieties at multiple price points, the common link being over-delivery against expectations. Its record with its Wigan Eden Valley Riesling (usually released when five years old) is second to none, and it has refined its Semillons to the point where it can take on the Hunter Valley at its own game with five-year-old releases. At the base level, the Semillon is the largest seller in that category in the country (albeit significantly diminished by Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc sales). Yet it is as a red winemaker that Peter Lehmann is best known in both domestic and export markets, with some outstanding wines leading the charge. Grapes are purchased from 150 growers in the Barossa and Eden valleys. The winery notched up its 30th vintage in 2012, and Andrew Wigan has been there for them all. Sadly, Peter Lehmann (the person) died on 28 June 2013, finally succumbing to illnesses that would have ended the life of a normal person far earlier. Exports to all major markets.
