McLaren Vale

The growth of Chalk Hill has accelerated after passing from parents John and Diana Harvey to grape-growing sons Jock and Tom. Both are heavily involved in wine industry affairs in varying capacities (Tom was a participant in the second intake of the Wine Industry Future Leaders Program) and the business has strong links with Greening Australia. (Chalk Hill donates 25c for each bottle sold, the highest per-bottle donation in the Australian wine industry.) Further acquisitions mean the vineyards now span each subregion of McLaren Vale, and have been planted to both the exotic (savagnin, barbera and sangiovese) and the mainstream (shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache, chardonnay and cabernet franc). The cellar door has been reopened, another sign of the success of the business. Exports to all major markets; exports to the US and Canada under the Alpha Crucis label.

Chalk Hill is a family owned wine company dedicated to making small batch, hand crafted wines of distinction. The Harvey family grape growing heritage goes back six generations in South Australia. Our six unique vineyards throughout McLaren Vale, are purposefully planted with varieties that best reflect varietal and regional character. Our Alpha Crucis brand, showcases an ultra premium wine range that focuses on the region’s reputation for producing world class red styles. The range includes both a single vineyard Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a unique initiative, the Alpha Crucis Winemaker’s Series. A namesake for the brightest star in the Southern Cross constellation, Alpha Crucis wines are an extension of this maxim, aspiring to create the finest wines, handcrafted from the most exceptional parcels of fruit from only the best vintages.
In addition to the iconic Shiraz and Cabernet styles of McLaren Vale, the unique blend of Australian terroir, a French winemaker and Italian varieties including Vermentino, Sangiovese and Barbera, results in wines styles that exude elegance, added savoury complexity and a great ability to pair with food.
