John Eason and wife Janene Ridley began the long, slow (and at times very painful) business of establishing their vineyard in 1992, just north of Mt Terrible – hence the choice of name. The original plantings were trials, DIY home winemaking likewise, aided by an extensive library of how-to books. In 2001 they found the courage to plant 2 ha of pinot noir (MV6, 115, 114 and 777 clones) on a gently sloping, north-facing river terrace adjacent to the Jamieson River. The DIY trials persuaded John to have the first commercial vintage in 2006 contract- made by Jane Donat, then Delatite winemaker. Construction has begun on an underground fireproof wine cellar, a cellar door to be built above. The Central Victoria Zone is shown as the region, as the vineyard is 5 km outside the boundary of the Upper Goulburn region. The ’07 vintage was lost to frost and smoke taint, but ’08 should put Mt Terrible back on track. Exports to the UK.
