Challon and Patricia Murdock began the long, slow and at times very frustrating process of establishing their vineyard in 1996. They planted 1.8 ha of chardonnay in that year, but 50% of the vines died over the next two years in the face of drought and inadequate water supply. Instead of deciding it was all too difficult, they persevered by planting 1.2 ha of pinot noir in 2000, with replanting in ’01, and then in ’05 signified the intention to become serious by planting between 0.5 ha and 1 ha each of shiraz, nebbiolo, sauvignon blanc, viognier, tempranillo and pinot grigio.
