Elgo Estate, owned by the Taresch family, is located high in the hills of the Strathbogie Ranges, 125 km northeast of Melbourne, a stone’s throw from the southern end of the Heathcote region. With almost 60 ha under vine, Elgo Estate is committed to sustainable viticulture reflecting and expressing the characteristics of this cool-climate region. Two distinct wine portfolios via the Allira and Elgo Estate labels are produced. All of the wines are 100% estate- grown from their three vineyards in the region, with plantings dating back to the early 1970s. Elgo Estate was the first winery in Australia to be fully powered by self-generated renewable wind energy. The installation of a 30 m tall 150kW wind turbine in 2007 enables Elgo to save around 400 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, while generating enough electricity to power the winery twice over, the excess green electricity being fed back into the main power grid.
