The Gioiello Estate vineyard was established by a Japanese company and originally known as Diawa Nar Darak. Planted between 1987 and ’96, it accounts for fractionally more than 9 ha on a 400-ha property of rolling hills, pastures, bushland, river flats, natural water springs and billabongs. The early wines produced were sold only in Japan, but their quality was demonstrated by the 1994 Daiwa Nar Darak Chardonnay, which won the George Mackey Award for Best Wine Exported from Australia in ’95. It is now owned by the Schiavello family, which is contemplating increasing the plantings with Italian varieties such as nebbiolo and arneis. The gold medal won by the 2007 Reserve Chardonnay at the 18th Annual Concours des Vins du Victoria in November ’08 proved the Mackey Award was no fluke.

Our Central Victorian vineyard is located within the Yea Valley on the Goulburn River, on the lower reaches of 651 meter high Mt Concord which is the eastern most point of the Strathbogie Ranges. The entire property is over one thousand acres of rolling hills, pastures, bush land, and river flats, natural water springs and billabongs. Our 22 acres of mature vines were planted on north facing slopes between 1987 and 1992. Our aim at Gioiello Estate is to create superlative single estate wines which have a distinct character reflective of this unique property and region.
