Capel Vale was established by Perth-based medical practitioner Dr Peter Pratten and wife Elizabeth in 1974. The first vineyard adjacent to the winery was planted on the banks of the quiet waters of Capel River. The very fertile soil gave rise to extravagant vine growth, providing 95% of the winery’s intake until the mid-1980s. The viticultural empire has since been expanded, spreading across Capel (35.66 ha), Mount Barker (25.06 ha), Pemberton (76.65 ha) and Margaret River (27.9 ha), with 18 varieties planted; the most recent arrivals are petit verdot, sangiovese, tempranillo and nebbiolo. Exports to all major markets.
