Former Houghton winemaker, now university lecturer and consultant, John Griffiths teamed with wife, Jane Micallef, to found Faber Vineyard. They have established shiraz, verdelho (1.5 ha each), brown muscat, chardonnay and petit verdot (0.5 ha each). Says John, ‘It may be somewhat quixotic, but I’m a great fan of traditional warm-area Australian wine styles – those found in areas such as Rutherglen and the Barossa, wines made in a relatively simple manner that reflect the concentrated ripe flavours one expects in these regions. And when one searches, some of these gems can be found from the Swan Valley.’ Possessed of an excellent palate, and with an impeccable winemaking background, the quality of John’s wines is guaranteed, although the rating is also quixotic. As well as the cellar door, opened in 2008, construction of a new barrel store was commenced in late ’10.
